Fellowship at USZ – Department of Traumatology

​We highly support and encourage international exchanges for students and for physicians at the University Hospital Zurich, Department of Traumatology and hosts numerous international fellows per year.

The city of Zurich

Zurich offers first-rate culture, shopping and dining experiences. You can easily reach the nearby picturesque Swiss alpine landscape by train or car. The University Hospital Zurich (USZ) is a 15-minute taxi ride away from Zurich Airport.

More than 50 museums, over 100 art galleries, classical concerts, operas and many other cultural events contribute to a varied cultural program. The city is also ideal for shopping tours. Numerous international and local brands have retail stores here. Leading hotels and restaurants also hotspots of comfort and indulgence.

Zurich is also a key international location for research. The USZ and the University of Zurich are a tried and tested unit when it comes to research and education. The University Hospital Zurich has also collaborated with the renowned Swiss Federal Institute of Technology (ETH) in Zurich in many fields.

University Hospital of Zurich

Located in the heart of Zurich, the University Hospital offers easy commuting options to all districts and nearby townships. Whether it is by car, tram, or bike, the infrastructure of Zurich is superb and allows visitors to navigate the city effortlessly. The hospital campus is directly connected to most research and technology facilities, while additional laboratories are located 30min on the outskirts of Zurich. Within its 44 departments and institutes, the hospital employs 7,800 personnel responsible for the care and treatment of patients, support and maintenance, and scientific advancement. More than 572,000 outpatient and 41,000 inpatient treatments were conducted in 2016.

Department of Traumatology

The Department of Traumatology is led by Prof. Dr. med. Hans-Christoph Pape, and specializes in the acute care of trauma patients and applies an exceptionally high focus on research for new treatment options. The department of Traumatology treats close to 3000 inpatient cases. The team is composed of 14 leading trauma experts and 25 resident surgeons, who all focus on various specialized interests in the field of trauma surgery, ranging from polytrauma, upper and lower extremities, spinal and pelvic injuries, and sport injuries.

The department of Traumatology offers detailed insights for fellows, not only applied surgical knowledge but research opportunities. We offer fellowship programs ranging from 6 to 12 weeks up to 3 years. Applicants are responsible for Swiss immigration visas and all financial funding, either through official scholarship (e.g. AO or SICOT). Medical and Liability insurance are not provided. Please be aware that the primary language of communication is German, but dialogs in English are welcome amongst the team.

The division of trauma research is composed of 8 experts, directed by PD Dr. sc. nat. Paolo Cinelli. There are three main research topics: polytrauma research & inflammation, regenerative medicine, and osteoporosis & genetic fracture management.

The research laboratory is integrated in the Division of Surgical Research and is equipped with state of the art infrastructure and offers the possibility to students to perform practical internships. The University of Zurich offers additional Seminars, transferable skills courses and specific scientific courses which can be additionally visited.

  • Proof of funding and insurance coverage
  • Visa requirements are determined by the swiss government.
  • Depending on the length of your stay, a working permit may have to be acquired by the Swiss immigration.  Therefore more time needs to be allotted for preparation of an extended stay.

In addition to fellowships, the department of Traumatology also provides professional partnerships for dissertations (only for EU citizens).

Accommodations

Accommodations are available offsite and booked privately by the visiting fellows. We are in contact with various short and long term providers and are happy to assist with housing arrangements. The fellowship coordinator will assist in finding suitable accommodation and overall organization of the fellowship.
