Treating bone misalignment

No matter whether they occur during growth or are caused by accidents, misalignments of the upper/lower extremities and spine and differences in leg length need not and should not be accepted in most cases. Treatment should aim to prevent complications, particularly premature joint damage (arthrosis) caused by inappropriate biomechanical stress. Last but not least, cosmetic considerations also play a role.

The first step towards successful correction is a detailed three-dimensional analysis of the deformity. This is preceded by a thorough physical examination using modern imaging procedures. A treatment plan is then drawn up based on the current reference values for the correction.

There are various proven, state-of-the-art surgical procedures that can correct misalignment and shortening, e.g.

  • Limb-lengthening nails
  • Three-dimensional corrective ring fixator systems with computer-assisted correction planning
  • Temporary epiphyseodesis during the growth phase (e.g. 8-plate)
  • Corrective osteotomies and osteosynthesis with fixed-angle plates

The following reconstructive methods can be used when treating larger-scale bone defects and pseudarthrosis:

  • Vascularised or non-vascularised autografting
  • Masquelet technique
  • Segment transport

Impaired mobility and axial misalignment of the upper extremity and the elbow region can also be treated with minimally invasive surgery using state-of-the-art fixator systems.
