Specialist training in the Department of Traumatology

The Department of Traumatology covers the entire spectrum of trauma surgery as required for specialists in orthopaedics and traumatology of the musculoskeletal system and for specialists in surgery with a focus on "specialized traumatology" (replacing the "old" focus on general and trauma surgery as of 1.1.24) (A1 status). There is also a further training option for orthopaedics and traumatology of the musculoskeletal system (C1 status).

Before qualifying as specialists, doctors in the Department of Traumatology are required to pass through various rotations. In each of these, they acquire knowledge and skills relating to a specific area (upper extremity, lower extremity/polytrauma, acute traumatology, spine/pelvis, sport/hips/knees, geriatric traumatology).

In the operating theatre, they are required to work through an extensive list of surgical procedures. Our junior doctors learn and consolidate their surgical skills under the observation of experienced supervisors.

The following rotations are set up in the Department of Traumatology:

  • in the operating theater
  • Outpatient consultation hours (USZ Circle Zurich-Airport Health Center)
  • Special consultation hours (Campus South2A USZ)
  • Trauma surgery wards
  • Surgery intensive care unit
  • Emergency Service

Scientific work in the research department of the Clinic for Traumatology complements clinical practice.

  • Mortality and Morbidity Conference (MMK)
  • Case presentations
  • Regular early training
  • Journal Club of Traumatology and Geriatric Traumatology
  • Shock room simulation training
  • Polytrauma Course
  • Trauma course AIOD
  • Mini workshop AO
  • ATLS / ETC courses
