Alexandra Fahrner (Krützfeldt Group) has been awarded with the Forschungskredit Candoc of the Universität Zürich for her PhD project ”Novel Biomarkers for Atrophy of Aged Skeletal Muscle”.
Ageing is associated with structural and functional changes, such as the qualitative as well as quantitative decline of skeletal muscle. Our data points to a novel connection between the specific gene expression in skeletal muscle stem cells and the stability of muscle fibers. The aim of the project is the mechanistic study of age-related muscle atrophy and to provide new concepts for therapeutic protocols to prevent the onset and progression of muscle mass decline and frailty.
